PMDSU (Masters – Doctorate)

The PMDSU (Master’s Education Towards Doctorate for Superior Graduates) program is an integrated and continuous implementation of master’s and doctoral programs in linear/relevant fields of science to provide opportunities for students with high intellectual abilities and maturity to voluntarily optimize their self-development in completing integrated master’s and doctoral education programs in a relatively shorter time.

IPB has been organizing the Masters Program Towards Doctorate for Outstanding Graduates (PMDSU, KemenristekDikti) since batch I, namely in the 2013/2014 academic year, batch II in the 2015/2016 academic year, batch III in the 2017/2018 academic year, the 2018/2019 academic year for batch IV, the 2019/2020 academic year for PMDSU Batch V, and the 2021/2022 academic year for PMDSU Batch VI.

In its development, PMDSU promoters at IPB experienced a very significant increase in the following batches, even though the requirements applied to the following batches were more complex.

Registration and Selection Procedures

Prospective students can find information about the PMDSU program, potential promoters, and their fields of study on the PMDSU website. PMDSU student registration and selection procedures follow regulations issued by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

  • Prospective students select a suitable promoter candidate, then contact the promoter to request the promoter’s willingness.
  • Prospective students await a response from their prospective promoter. If the promoter confirms they are prospectively accepted, they can then register online simultaneously on two websites: the PMDSU scholarship program page and the IPB Graduate School new student registration page.
  • The Ministry of Education and Culture will conduct administrative selection based on the established requirements, and the IPB Postgraduate School will conduct academic selection as new students at the IPB Postgraduate School.
  • Data on prospective PMDSU students who have passed the Ministry of Education and Culture selection can be accessed on the PMDSU page by the IPB SPs admin.
  • The SPs verifies applicant data to ensure that prospective PMDSU students are also accepted with REGULAR Status at the IPB SPs.
  • SPs IPB sends final data to each PMDSU promoter.
  • The PMDSU Promoter selects students from the final data and submits the results to the IPB Graduate School. The PMDSU student selection is made at a PMDSU selection meeting attended by the Graduate School and the PMDSU Promoter.
  • SPs sends a list of PMDSU students who passed the selection to the Ministry of Education and Culture.
  • The Ministry of Education and Culture issued a Decree on PMDSU Student Admissions.
  • Students attend verification as new students of SPs IPB.

Education Roadmap

In the first year, PMDSU students will take compulsory courses for the Master’s program. Evaluation of learning outcomes will be conducted at the end of semester 2. This evaluation will result in a decision to terminate studies if the GPA is less than 3. If the GPA at the end of semester 2 is > 3.75, then PMDSU students can continue their education at the doctoral level, and if it is less than that number, students can only complete the master’s program.

Based on the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education Regulation Number 44 of 2015, that the master’s program or applied master’s program that continues to the doctoral program or applied doctoral program must complete the master’s program or applied master’s program before completing the doctoral program, then PMDSU batch 4 students must complete the S2 program, with the minimum credit load that must be taken as follows.

Master’s Program
Lectures: 19 – 27 credits
Final Project: 14 credits

  • Colloquium 1
  • Seminar (As EC) 1
  • Proposal 2
  • Thesis 6
  • Publication 2
  • Thesis exam 2

Total 36 – 39 credits

Doctoral Program
Lectures: 12 – 18 credits
Final Project: 28 credits

  • Proposal 2
  • Written Prelim 2
  • Oral Prelim 2
  • Colloquium 1
  • Seminar (as EC) 1
  • Dissertation 12
  • National publication 2
  • International publication 3
  • Closed exam 3

Total 42 – 45 credits

Total S2 and S3 78 – 84 credits

The doctoral program’s credit load of 42 credits plus 3 credits of English courses, bringing the total to 45 credits, is also in accordance with the National Standards for Higher Education (Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education Regulation No. 44 of 2015). With the change in the number of credits for a dissertation, there is an adjustment to the number of courses that doctoral students must complete. This change will provide convenience for PMDSU students because the credit load is allocated more for research and the completion of final assignments.
