Nutritionist Professional Programme

Nutritionist Professional Programme

Study Program Overview

The IPB Nutritionist Professional Education programme is the first Nutritionist Study Programme in Indonesia. The establishment of this study programme was prompted by Law Number 17 of 2023 on Health, which mandates that the nutrition profession in Indonesia consists of Nutritionists and Dietitians. Nutrition professionals with the functional title of Nutritionist have long been active in Indonesia; however, Nutritionists were not previously recognised as a profession at Level 7 of the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI).

The existence of the Nutrition Council and College formed by the Ministry of Health has encouraged the creation of Professional Standards and Competency Standards for Nutritionists, which serve as the basis for formulating the competencies and curriculum of the IPB Nutritionist Professional Education programme. The implementation of this programme is supported by a joint agreement between the Nutrition College, the Indonesian Association of Nutrition Education Institutions (AIPGI), and the Indonesian Nutritionists Association (PERSAGI). This institutional support demonstrates a national commitment to strengthening the capacity of nutrition personnel, particularly nutritionists, in responding to the increasingly complex needs, issues, and challenges of community nutrition.

The Nutritionist and Dietitian professions have different but complementary scopes of competence and work. Nutritionists focus more on promotive, preventive, and nutritional advocacy services, while Dietitians focus on curative and rehabilitative services. The role of nutritionists is becoming increasingly important with the rising prevalence of obesity and various metabolic syndromes such as hyperlipidaemia and hyperglycaemia, which need to be controlled and prevented to avoid non communicable diseases (PTM) that can increase mortality rates, reduce life expectancy, and hamper economic development.

Based on the competency standards currently being finalised by the Nutrition College and Nutrition Council, there are eight areas of professional competency for nutritionists, including:

  1. Implementation of safety in nutrition services
  2. Assessment and surveillance of community nutritional status
  3. Food management and nutrition programmes
  4. Nutrition consultation and education
  5. Digital literacy and nutrition innovation
  6. Food safety and nutritional quality audits
  7. Evaluation and advocacy of nutrition programme policies
  8. Nutritionist professionalism

A study by the Ministry of Health (2015) shows that Indonesia will need 36.391 nutritionists over the next 20 years, while the current number is very limited at 746 nutritionists (without professional nutritionist education). President Prabowo Subianto’s policy regarding the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme, which will establish 35.000 Nutrition Fulfilment Service Units (SPPG), also highlights the importance of the role of nutritionists. In addition, the presence of nutritionists from other countries in Indonesia needs to be anticipated. Regarding the ASEAN Economic Community (MEA) policy, nutritionist graduates from abroad, especially from Asia and Australia, have been able to easily enter and work in Indonesia since 2016. Indonesian nutritionists must be prepared to compete both at home and abroad with foreign nutritionists.

The Nutritionist Professional Education Study Programme at IPB was established based on IPB Academic Senate Decree No. 17 of 2025 concerning the Establishment of the Nutritionist Professional Education Study Programme on 4 August 2025. Furthermore, this study programme has also undergone Minimum Accreditation by LAM-PTKes on December 10–11 2025.

This study programme was declared to “Meet the Minimum Accreditation Requirements” on December 20 2025 through a Decree of the LAM-PTKes Association with letter number 0017/LAM-PTKes/Akr PSB.PTN-BH/Pro/XII/2025.

The Department of Nutrition Science, IPB University, starting in early 2026, will offer a Nutritionist Professional Education Study Programme. This programme complements the existing education levels, namely Bachelor of Nutrition, Master of Nutrition Science, Doctor of Nutrition Science, and Dietitian Profession, all of which have been accredited as Excellent. As a result, IPB University becomes the pioneer in offering the first Nutritionist Professional Education programme in Indonesia.
